Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the mint family Lamiaceae, native to south-central Europe, the Mediterranean basin, Iran, and Central Asia. It features gentle, lemon-scented leaves that have been utilized for centuries in culinary dishes, herbal teas, and traditional medicine. The plant grows in bushy clumps, producing small white or yellowish flowers that attract bees, which inspired its generic name Melissa, the Greek word for honeybee. Lemon balm is highly valued for its calming properties, often used to alleviate stress, promote sleep, and soothe digestive discomfort. It is extremely resilient, easy to grow in diverse garden settings, and can spread rapidly if not properly contained in the landscape.
