Mosses

Mosses

Mosses are small, non-vascular flowerless plants that typically form dense green clumps or mats in damp or shady locations. The individual plants are usually composed of simple leaves that are generally only one cell thick, attached to a stem that may be branched or unbranched and has only a limited role in conducting water and nutrients. Although some species lack traditional vascular tissue, others are equipped with specialized tissues for internal transport. Mosses do not have seeds or flowers and instead reproduce using spores produced in capsules borne on setas or stalks. They play a critical ecological role by preventing soil erosion, retaining moisture, and serving as pioneer species in disturbed ecosystems.
